The Village Idiot
I love October. It’s my favorite time of year – did I mention that already like 8 times?? One of my regular activities is to watch scary movies – the ones on the local programming complete with bad editing, commercial breaks and horrible acting. Yesterday I enjoyed a few on the Sci Fi channel by one of my mentors Stephen King. He’s an amazingly fascinating imagination, but his methods of storytelling are soooooooo drawn out and the movie adaptations are sooooooo cheesy. But still, it’s spook month.
I remember one of the scariest movies I saw in the early 80’s was Orson Well’s The Man Who Saw Tomorrow – the narrated story of Nostradaumus.
As kids, we all took to bed with us our random scary prophecies – my youngest brother had nightmares about the ‘man with the blue turban’ while I tossed and turned about ‘the villiage idiot’. And I must confess, 25 + years later, I am still affected by the concept of the “village idiot’. There are TONS of Village Idiots – the people who assume roles of leadership and guidance who are really not (i.e. Mitt Romney) and various other people who attempt to lead a group of people in smaller subcultures who do not embody the fundamental principals of positive leadership. During the innauguration ceremony of G. W. Bush, I thought I had originally laid my eyes upon the true Village Idiot…and then along came Sarah Palin.
