Mrs. O in Moschino

Here is a great example of how to re-mix and interpret runway to real life – AND done by Michelle Obama!! So yes, it can totally be done, let’s not get all panicy and watch with favor to see the new presidential era unfold in front of us. How fun!!!

Donna Karan, DVF and Oscar speak

I have this website on my RSS feed, so of course I was waiting to hear the word that the fashion designers have spoken…and apparantly, DK, DVF and Oscar have spoken. I think that Mrs. O would look amazing in Donna Karan, but only the actual Donna Karan line, NOT DKNY. I’m not sure that Diane Von Furstenburg’s ready to wear would be very flattering on Michelle Obama, but I know for sure that Donna Karan would be AMAZING on her. And as a personal couturier, wouldn’t Korto from Project Runway create some simply fantastic pieces for Mrs. O?? I think it would be a match made in Style Heaven!!!

First Lady Rules of the House

I live by the saying ‘There is only ONE Queen per castle” and this January, Michelle Obama will reign supreme. I’m excited to see what rules she will lay down, as we all know that once the queen has spoken…I was reading on an interview online that President Elect Barack Obama had made a deal with Michelle that he would agree to quit smoking if she would allow for him to accept the nomination. The next couple of things that we, the people, have been informed of is that they need to consider 2 things when getting a dog: 1, allergy issues for one of the daughters, and 2. that the dog be rescued from a shelter…preferrably. (Fantastic btw) !!!

Anyway, since we are talking about First Lady House Rules, I thought I’d add a few of interest that I remember reading about somewhere in my past.

Sarah Polk – talk about player hating! First Lady Sarah Polk banned drinking alcohol, dancing and playing cards in the White House.

Nancy Reagan – After President Elect Barack Obama’s kind of silly joke about passing up on seance activity with the previous First Lady, I’m not sure that I remember news of her holding actual seances, but I do remember reading about how she had a guru of sorts, and would take her astrology readings very seriously. It was reported at the time that she would consult her astrologer when planning President Ronald Reagan’s daily schedule and required the staff to comply accordingly.

Hilary Clinton – Did you ever read her book It Takes a Village? I did, and I still have it. It’s a great book and I totally recommend it. Anyway, during the press junket/circuit, it was leaked that the First Lady would have ’secret conversations’ with Eleanor Roosevelt during her time in the White House.

Lucy Hayes – no alcohol in the White House during Rutherford Haye’s term. Period.

Jacqueline Kennedy – broke the mold by insisting on inviting creative individuals as guests to the White House. Most frequent would be writers, artists and musicians.

The First Lady Wears the Dress

As a stylist, I’ve encountered SO many disasters when couture meshes with real life. I’ve got some stories, but sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. I had heard through the grapevine that First Lady Michelle Obama’s “personal” designer was a local whom she was giving a break to – for exposure and what not. But on election day, First Lady Michelle Obama chose a FABULOUS design by Narsisco Rodriguez from the upcoming spring 09 collection: Take a look here:

Now, when you get a real woman with some age, weight and no stylist, you don’t think about the extra material that is going to be needed to re-fit the dress, tailor the pattern and customize it to fit the body. And then when you throw a J Crew soccer mom caplet sweater on top of that, you basically have a fashion disaster…which is what has happened here. As a voter, I think it economically sound that Michelle Obama doesn’t have a stylist…but then I stop and think, do I know that for sure? I really don’t. She could very well have a stylist, or perhaps she just didn’t work that day…or maybe she doesn’t know her client very well, or…something. But it’s another example of how imperative it is to know your digs, and know them well. Narcisco Rodriguez is a fantastic designer, and First Lady Michelle Obama is a fantastic woman…the two simply don’t work well with whatever third party stylist is in the background. I would even opt to go as far as to say that perhaps the Obama circuit should hire Sarah Palin’s stylist…I’m sure he needs a job right about now?

Anyway, we could all learn a lesson from this disaster. Just because it looks good on a 89 lb 17 year old 6 foot tall professional model, does not necessarily mean it will look good on you. And it doesn’t have to. You can still look fly, you just need to know how to hire someone to guide you in the right direction. BTW, I’m totally available. ;)
